# Aspera

# Aspera

Aspera is used for high-speed file transfers. Users run an Aspera client on their machine (see [Aspera Desktop](/features/aspera-desktop)), and Pixwel's transfers run through **IBM Aspera on Cloud** and its Transfer Server (ATS) — not an on-premises server.

The API builds transfer specs and signs Aspera tokens against the IBM Aspera Cloud and Node APIs (`api.ibmaspera.com`, `ats-aws-us-west-2.aspera.io`) — see `api/config/bootstrap/connections.php` and `api/models/Aspera.php`.

Credentials are in [Pixwel Platform Operations](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PAFIUkQmmoOr4cnlW-b5sqHx7Ittpgkc8ACv4q6YyA0/edit#heading=h.fg6ingy9gmtd).

Infrastructure is described in [Pixwel Platform Infrastructure](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qdo2jY3rv_fh7s2K15d2OzCrha60tKTjxZ3cxSPlCxo/edit#heading=h.jb0jxd8ovf8h).

<Note>
  The legacy on-premises Aspera servers (`aspera.pixwel.com`, `ddd.pixwel.com` in the "magic closet") are **deprecated**. Jamie's [Aspera Connect Server DDD.PIXWEL.COM](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VmL5EOQUtLIh5P_TRapTcIs2pW9-qJKgnRPMRYvCm1o/edit#heading=h.tmbxahloanvh) doc describes that old setup and is kept for historical reference only.
